About Surf Music:
If you want to know about how surf music came to be surf music, just ask Paul Johnson of the Duo-Tones, he’ll be happy to school you with a brief history lesson. Paul was an original member of the Bel-Airs, whose hit ‘Mr. Moto’ was one of the very first ‘surf music’ records to become popular. Paul will tell you about the early days back in ’61 when the Bel-Airs were playing their music on the Newport Pier and Dick Dale and the Deltones were playing parties around the corner. Their music was heavily influenced by the great instrumental acts of the late 50’—guys like Duane Eddy and bands like the Ventures. Most of their fans dancing to the new beat were young surfers and it was as simple as that. It was surf music because the surfers dug it. Somehow, in a way that can only be felt, it reminded them of being out there riding the waves.
I created this festival, in part, to celebrate the original sounds of surf music from the early sixties, and also to answer the question of “what does ‘surf music’ mean today?” Describing a band’s music in terms of a genre can often be a distracting way of pigeonholing somebody’s artistic expression. I seek not to create a ridiculous new subgenre name for today’s surf music, but rather, to show how diverse the range has become. You will hear punk, you will hear jazz, you will hear traditional Hawaiian music, you will hear reggae, you will hear folk, you will hear ukulele, you will hear rock and you will hear sounds that you’ve never heard before. Some of the musicians surf, some of them don’t. This is music from the coast—east and west. This is surf music: it’s what the surfers dig.
About the Festival:
“Summer Fun on the 101: A Festival of Surf Music “ is all about surf music, past, present and future. These will be small, intimate shows taking place in the open air outside of some local businesses located in Encinitas, C.A.—one of America’s great surf towns. We’re talking sun, fun and music. Catch some music and then go catch some rays on the beach. Dig the businesses providing the music—each is a fine purveyor of surf cultural artifacts in its own right. Check out the other fine independent retailers in town. There will not be food vendors, and we hope that this encourages you to support one of the many fine restaurants and eateries along the Highway 101. Party down in funky town! Suggested donation for attendance is $10 and a part of the proceeds will go to fund the Paul Ecke Central: School as a Garden program.
